The trial opened with the process of selecting 12 jurors and six alternates, all of whom will remain anonymous and be vetted for impartiality. The court proceeding follows Combs’ formal rejection of a plea deal on May 1.

Details of the proposed agreement were not made public, but federal prosecutor Madison Smyser confirmed at an earlier hearing that Combs had declined the offer. “Mr. Combs has pleaded not guilty to all charges and looks forward to his day in court,” his attorney Marc Agnifilo said.

The federal case against Combs includes five charges, racketeering, sex trafficking, and three related counts, stemming from multiple indictments and new evidence introduced over recent months. On April 25, Judge Arun Subramanian ruled that a video allegedly showing Combs beating former girlfriend Cassie in a hotel room in 2016 would be admissible in court, despite the defense’s claim it had been altered.

“There’s no unfair prejudice to Mr. Combs,” Judge Subramanian said during the hearing.

Combs’ legal team has signaled its defense strategy may rest in part on arguments that his encounters were consensual and occurred within the context of an adult lifestyle. “He took part in the ‘lifestyle’ of a ‘swinger,’” Agnifilo told the court.

On April 19, the same judge denied a request from Combs’ legal team to delay the trial by two months. The defense had argued they needed more time to respond to additional charges added on April 4. The court rejected the request, saying it was filed too late, and kept the trial schedule intact.
