Mia has toppled Olivia as the most popular girl's name in California for 2024, nudging Olivia to second place after reigning supreme since 2019.

In the boys' category, Liam surpassed Noah for the top spot, marking their seventh year of competition in California. The Social Security Administration releases a report each May detailing the most popular baby names, showing that Californians' preferences align with the rest of the nation, according to Lookout.co..

Nationwide, Liam and Noah were the top two boy names, while Olivia and Emma led the girls' list. Mia ranked fifth across the country.

The ten most favored names in California are Liam, Noah, Matteo, Santiago, Mia, Olivia, Camila, Emma, Sebastian, and Sophia.

For the sixth consecutive year, these two names have dominated the U.S. baby names list for 2024. The Social Security Administration keeps an annual record of names given to girls and boys in each state, with data dating back to 1880.

Liam and Olivia continue to be popular, according to the Associated Press.

Just in time for Mother's Day, the agency revealed the most popular names from applications for Social Security cards on Friday. Liam has held his reign for boys for eight straight years, while Olivia has been the girls' favorite for six years.

Emma and Noah also maintained their second-place positions for girls and boys for the sixth year in a row.

The name Luna has dipped below the Top 10, making room for Sofia, which broke into the number 10 spot for the first time. Liam continues to lead as the top choice for boys' names, followed by Noah, Oliver, Theodore, James, Henry, Mateo, Elijah, Lucas, and William.

In the realm of girls' names, Olivia is followed closely by Emma, Amelia, Charlotte, Mia, Sophia, Isabella, Evelyn, Ava, and now, Sofia. Sophie Kihm, editor-in-chief of the baby-naming resource Nameberry, comments on the fresh data spotlighting a trend among American parents to select names that hold universal appeal.

It's worth noting that the variations of Kihm’s own name—Sophie and Sophia—are both present on this year's list. Kihm reflected on the naming trends, saying: "A trend we're tracking is that Americans are more likely to choose heritage choices," including names that are internationally adaptable.

She also observes that, "More families in the U.S. come from mixed cultural backgrounds, and I hear parents commonly request that they want their child to travel and have a relatively easy to understand name."

Birth statistics from the Social Security Administration reveal a slight increase in babies born in 2024, with totals going up to 3.61 million from 3.59 million the previous year.

The administration further notes that social media influencers and blockbuster television series have played significant roles in propelling certain baby names into the limelight.

For girl's names, Ailany, a charming Hawaiian title meaning "chief," is now capturing hearts and attention.

Meanwhile, the name Truce, which has Old English origins meaning "peace," has surged an impressive 11,118 spots to claim the 991st rank on the list.
