Three NASCAR Cup Series stars were punished before the Coca-Cola 600 even started. Kyle Busch, Erik Jones and Ross Chastain were all sent to the back of the field.

Busch, who has announced contract news with Richard Childress Racing, but instantly had a disaster in practice, was sent to the rear for unapproved adjustments to his car. Erik Jones, driving the No.43 car for Legacy Motor Club, faced the same fate.

And they still had Ross Chastain behind them. Chastain was already due to start at the back after failing to qualify due to a crash in practice, and he was sent to the rear behind the penalized Busch and Jones for moving to his backup car.

Busch had qualified in 24th place, with Jones in 27th. But they faced a nightmare start, leaving them needing to work their way through the pack.

Busch won the Crown Jewel race in 2018. He addressed the challenges of the longest race on the calendar on Saturday before his problems started.

"It's a longer race, so you have more time from sunlight to nighttime, and typically, you don't really worry about how your car is until you get to the nighttime because that's when the money's paid, so you want to be fast at that time of the day," Busch said;

"There are so many little details that you can find (on the car). If you find 100 small, tiny details, then that's all going to add up."

Meanwhile, he discussed what the No.8 car needs to get back into Victory Lane. He said: "I feel like there's times in the race where we do have, you know, top speed, but it's not the whole race. So, you know, we've got to work on beginning to end and being able to put everything together," he said.

"The guys at the shop have been doing a good job working on all of that, whether it's car build or little things in the setups," he added.
