Katherine Legge is floating on Cloud 9 after finally snapping her rotten luck in NASCAR with a top-20 Cup Series finish. She joins women's motorsport trailblazer Danica Patrick in the history books.

The 44-year-old Brit will compete in several races across NASCAR's Cup and Xfinity Series in 2025. However, Legge has suffered nothing short of terrible luck in both racing series. Her Cup debut saw her spin out early before taking out full-time driver Daniel Suarez late, sparking mass debate over NASCAR's approval process for such entries.

Before her 19th-place finish in Chicago, which saw  her become the first woman since Patrick in 2017 to finish in the top 20 of a NASCAR Cup race, Legge had not broken the top 30 in nine attempts across both racing series in 2025. With a spring in her step and a response to her critics, Legge has returned to work as she prepares to compete in the Cup Series at Sonoma this weekend.

Legge posted a picture to her Instagram of her on a realistic race simulator. "Back to work," she captioned the social media story as she beamed after her latest motorsport feat.

Legge knows she competes in a male-dominated sport, but it doesn't bother the Brit. "If you're a certain way to somebody, that says more about them than it does about you," she told US Weekly in May. "As you get older, you just kind of accept it and you don't care anymore. It's not really my problem if if you think I'm wearing too much mascara."

She received mixed welcomes from NASCAR rivals, too. Legge issued a blunt response to those who were perhaps on the unfriendly side. "Most of them don't know me," she added.

"It's been a very mixed bag of who's reached out, who's been kind, who's not been so kind. I don't know, I think, maybe, it's just the insecure ones that are not really nice."

"I think people are reluctant to see change," she continued. "But if I was out there winning all the time, then maybe people would be like, 'OK, the girls can do it.'

"I think you have to see it to believe it to a certain extent. Hopefully the more people that can break through that outer shell to be part of it and are tough enough to stick with it to learn and progress, then I think you'll see times changing."

Legge is the latest women's driver hoping to inspire the next generation of girls hoping for a career in motorsport. Formula 1 is paying a particular focus to encouraging women into single-seater racing with its F1 Academy.

In year's to come, other global racing series' could follow suit, including NASCAR. "I’m not immune to the responsibility because you do have a lot of young girls who come up to you at the racetrack who look up to you," Legge said.

"So, you have that in the background. I want to honor that and I don’t want to play into the fact that I’m female. I want to do it the professional, proper way and be seen as a legit race car driver.”
