George Wendt fans flock to Cheers bar in Boston to pay their respects following his death

The Boston Cheers bar has seen fans flocking to pay their respects to late star George Wendt who was known for his role as iconic Norm Peterson in the show

Cheers fans have flocked to the Boston bar to pay tribute to the late George Wendt following his death.

The venue has  paid tribute to the iconic star with a touching display that includes a banner with a picture of him erected on railings outside.

The banner also states "thank you for the laughs," in homage to George who played legendary character Norm Peterson on the sitcom.

Once inside the bar fans can sign a guestbook packed with tributes that has been placed on the bar in the spot where he used to sit, with it already packed with messages for him.

The addition to the bar comes after stool at the bar was reserved with a beer on the bar beside it when news of Georges death broke earlier this week.

The beloved actor sadly passed away at the age of 76 on May 20. Now the tribute book for the star has been placed on the bar alongside a picture of him with an array of quotes in a frame.

The words accompany an image of the actor alongside his name in full - George Robert Wendt Jr. It reads: "Whats the story, Norm!" It then adds: "'Boy meets beer, boy drinks beer, boy meets another beer!' - Norm. Thank you for all the laughs."

A candle is also seen lit in the spot reserved at the bar as well as a large vase of flowers. George's family confirmed the news of the beloved Hollywood star's passing on Tuesday, May 20. The Chicago-native died peacefully in his sleep at his family home. His official cause of death has not been released at this time.

A representative for the actor shared in a statement: "George was a doting family man, a well-loved friend and confidant to all of those lucky enough to have known him. He will be missed forever. The family has requested privacy during this time.”

During his many years in the spotlight, George starred in at least 28 films including his roles in Dreamscape (1984), House (1985), Fletch (1985), Gung Ho (1986), Plains Clothes (1987), Never Say Die (1988), Guilty by Suspicion (1991), Forever Young (1992) and Spice World (1997).

But George is most famously known for his character Norm in hit NBC sitcom Cheers which ran for 11 seasons from 1982-1993. In the series, Norm was the relatable "everyman" who was known for his regular visits to the bar, his witty self deprecating sense of humor, and his love for beer.

Norm held a special place in many viewers hearts as he was one of the three core characters in the show and appeared in all 275 episodes.

During his legendary run on Cheers, George was honored with six consecutive nominations for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series.
