Mariah Carey slammed for 'lip-syncing' during 2025 BET Awards performance

The 2025 BET Awards marked its 25th anniversary with a night filled with unforgettable performances, tributes, and highlights, but Mariah Carey's appearance is what really stuck with some fans.

During the ceremony, Carey was celebrated with the Ultimate Icon Award, sharing the honor with legends like Snoop Dogg, Jamie Foxx, and Kirk Franklin. However, her performance left viewers underwhelmed, as they took to social media to slam her for lip-syncing yet again and being "robotic" on stage.

Draped in an oversized trench coat, Carey made her entrance behind a grand "MC" banner, later revealing a shimmering gold dress underneath. The pop diva sported sleek, straight blonde hair and remained almost motionless while delivering her songs.

Audiences quickly voiced their disappointment on X, with comments such as: "It's so easy to tell when the mic isn't on."

Another fumed: "Mariah Carey just lip syncing away. Lol no effort," as a third said: "Mariah Carey....great gowns, beautiful gowns. Lip syncing like this. Tuh!!"

Speaking about her being motionless, one fan wrote, "Mariah is so robotic. " Another fan questioned, "Honey, is Mariah okay? She's always looking spaced out like she doesn't know where she's at."

One viewer remarked: "Stiff Mariah, as per usual." 

Further critiques surfaced online, including: "Ummmm..Is Mariah ok..Teleprompter too far ..She looks like she don't know where she is," and "Wait was it just me or something wrong with Mariah Carey? What she couldn't move or something? and why she had to get walked out?".

Another fan even suggested a more comfortable setup for future shows: "Next time, just let Mariah perform on a seated throne... this is giving recent hip replacement. Let's allow our Diva to rest and pose tf off like a queen."

Other fans couldn't help but comment on Carey's ageless appearance, with one simply stating: "So sexy."

The BET Ultimate Icon Award recognizes industry legends for "their decades of groundbreaking contributions to music, entertainment, advocacy, and community impact," according to a press release.

With Kevin Hart returning as host and big names like Kendrick Lamar, Doechii, Drake, and GloRilla leading the nominations, fans were in for an unforgettable night on June 9.

The evening featured performances by Lil Wayne, Teyana Taylor, GloRilla, Playboi Carti, and Leon Thomas at the Peacock Theater, celebrating the biggest night in culture.

"We're setting the tone for a night that celebrates 25 years of impact, creativity, and Black culture," Connie Orlando, EVP of Specials, Music Programming and Music Strategy at BET, said in a press release prior to the ceremony.

"With electrifying performances from some of the biggest names in music and an iconic comedic host, 'BET Awards' 2025 will be a can't-miss celebration of everything the culture represents.

"I love a celebration! It's a chance to reflect, cherish, and honor life's unforgettable moments," Hart, 45, said in a press release in April.

"I'm truly honored to host the 25th BET Awards and celebrate the culture's biggest night. This year marks the 25th anniversary, and my partners at Hartbeat, BET, and JCE are pulling out all the stops to make it a night to remember.

"It's a Black-Tie affair, and you're all invited," added the actor from Central Intelligence.
