Country music singer stopped at airport for loaded gun narrowly escaping jail time

A prolific country music star found themselves having a run-in with law enforcement when they were found to be carrying a loaded weapon in an airport

Popular country music star Sammy Kershaw found himself in a spot of trouble last month when he was stopped by airport security for carrying a loaded gun.

The iconic singer  was in Lafayette, LA, when his bag was flagged by TSA.

He was mortified when they discovered he  had a loaded handgun in his baggage, which subsequently landed him a $5,000 fine.

While that seems like a large sum of money, things could have been worse as he could have been fined up to $10,000 and received jail time.

Speaking in a statement about the incident Sammy explained that he simply wasn't thinking straight.

He said, "It was early, I was half-awake and clearly not thinking straight. I’ve sang songs about heartbreak and hard times but not about forgetting to check my carry-on for a loaded firearm. That’s a new one!

"I guess it’s safe to say I won’t be packing heat to my next show. Let this be your friendly PSA: check your bags, check ‘em twice. Let’s all stay safe out there."

Sammy - who hails from Louisiana has 16 studio albums and more than 25 TOP 40 Billboard Hot Country Songs charts singles under his belt. He is best known for his song She Don’t Know She’s Beautiful which reached number one on the charts.

There are very strict rules and regulations in place for travel with a firearm. You can actually fly with firearms and ammunition, but there are very specific guidelines in place for those wanting to do so.

The TSA website explains, "You may transport unloaded firearms in a locked hard-sided container as checked baggage only.

"Declare the firearm and/or ammunition to the airline when checking your bag at the ticket counter."

There are also strict regulations regarding the container you are allowed to transport your items in when boarding a flight,

The case must be very secure with no easy access to the weapon and those carrying firearms should also check with local, state and international government regulations for their travel destination.
