Elon Musk no longer working from White House as he scales back work at DOGE
Musk has been designated a "special government employee," with his time in the role set to expire in May
Elon Musk is no longer working in-person from his office near the White House as he prepares to scale back his involvement with the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), the Trump administration has revealed.
President Donald Trump has tasked the tech billionaire and DOGE with slashing federal spending. Musk had been working out of the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, just steps away from the Oval Office.
But White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles has told The New York Post that Musk is now working remotely.

“Instead of meeting with him in person, I’m talking to him on the phone, but it’s the same net effect,” Wiles said.
“He’s not out of it altogether. He’s just not physically present as much as he was,” she added.
Wiles said that while the Tesla CEO would be “stepping back a little” he was not “abandoning” his role with DOGE, adding that “his folks aren’t going anywhere.”
Musk has been designated a "special government employee," which allows him to work at a government job for 130 days each year. His time in the role is set to expire in May.
Last week, Musk said that from May, he will start dedicating more time to Tesla, adding that he expects to spend just “a day or two per week on government matters.”
"I think starting probably next month, in May, my time allocation to DOGE will drop significantly," Musk told investors on a conference call.
It comes after the electric automaker suffered plummeting revenue while he was working for Trump. Tesla said that quarterly profits fell by 71 percent to $409 million, or 12 cents a share.
In recent months, Tesla dealerships and charging stations around the world have been targeted in a string of protests, vandalism and arson attacks, amid backlash over Musk’s ties to Trump and his leadership at DOGE.
His work with DOGE has led to the firing of thousands of federal employees, with entire agencies brought to a standstill. Critics have raised concerns that Musk is amassing unaccountable power with little transparency.
