A mass shooting at a house party in North Carolina early Sunday morning left one person dead and 11 others injured.

The Catawba County Sheriff's Office responded to the incident in Hickory, approximately 60 miles northwest of Charlotte, around 12:45 a.m., following reports of multiple people shot.

Upon arrival, deputies discovered 12 people had been shot; one was pronounced dead at the scene while the remaining 11 were hospitalized with serious injuries, including one in critical condition.

Major Aaron Turk of the Catawba County Sheriff's Office told WNCN that the shooting occurred during a party at the residence, suggesting there may have been "more than one involved," referring to potential shooters.

However, no exact count of suspects is available yet, and no arrests have been made. The shooting reportedly took place in various locations around the property, including the street, yard, inside the home, and neighboring backyards, resulting in a widespread crime scene.

The Catawba County Sheriff's Office is collaborating with the Hickory Police Department, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, and the FBI to investigate the incident, the Mirror US reported.

The probe into the mass casualty event is zeroing in on identifying suspects and pinning down a motive. Catawba County Sheriff's Office is urging anyone with more details to contact them at 828-464-3112.

The identities and ages of the victims have not been disclosed. Nevertheless, law enforcement sources informed WBTV that there seems to be a range of ages among the casualties.

A local described to the media outlet how the gunfire broke out during a pool party, mentioning that the incident unfolded predominantly outside the residence and seemed "random."

Officials discussing the case with WSOC-TV stated that the violence erupted as over a hundred individuals congregated at the dwelling for the festivity, leading to multiple partygoers opening fire.

Further particulars regarding the ongoing investigation have not been made public at this time.
