Kidman was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, in 1967 but moved to Australia with her family at age three, where she was raised in Sydney.
Her father was a psychologist, and her mother, a nursing instructor, was also involved with the Women's Electoral Lobby.
Antonia Kidman, Nicole's sister, has made a name for herself as a journalist and TV host.
Tom Cruise
On the Days of Thunder film set in 1990, Kidman met her future husband, the famed actor Tom Cruise.
In the movie, Cruise played a race car driver, and Kidman was cast as his love interest, Dr. Claire Lewicki.
Cruise, who had just finalized his divorce from Mimi Rogers, married Kidman in a cozy Christmas Eve ceremony in Colorado.
In a candid 2016 Red Magazine interview, Kidman reflected on her young marriage to Cruise, noting, "I was so young when I got married," as she was only 23 and Cruise was 28 at the time.
Reflecting on her past, she said: "I look back now and I'm like, 'What?'".
After adopting Isabella and Connor together, Cruise filed for divorce in 2001 citing "irreconcilable differences" resulting in the children primarily living with him.
The separation took fans worldwide by surprise, including Kidman herself. Ten years later, she told DuJour magazine: "I thought our life together was perfect.
"It took me a very long time to heal. It was a shock to my system."
At the time, a representative for the actress announced: "This divorce was not her decision. Tom made the move. Nicole is in a state of shock."
To this day, the exact reasons behind the actors' split remain a mystery, but both have since been involved in other high-profile relationships.
Cruise later married Katie Holmes, with whom he had a daughter, Suri, only to divorce in 2012.
Kidman, on the other hand, briefly got engaged to Lenny Kravitz in 2003 before finding love with country singer Keith Urban, her partner since 2006.

Tragic loss
In September 2014, Kidman suffered a devastating loss when her father, Dr Anthony Kidman, died from a heart attack in a Singapore hotel while visiting her sister Antonia.
Then last year, Kidman experienced further grief when her mother passed away in September.
Reflecting on life's challenges to GQ, Kidman shared: "So life is, whew. It's definitely a journey. And it hits you as you get older," confessing to sleepless nights filled with tears and gasps.
"If you're in it and not numbing yourself to it. And I'm in it. Fully in it," she admitted. "Mortality. Connection. Life coming and hitting you.
"And loss of parents and raising children and marriage and all of the things that go into making you a fully sentient human. I'm in all of those places."
Sadly, her mother passed away before getting the chance to witness her daughter's latest achievements, as she revealed to Vanity Fair: "I wish she could have seen this part of it.
"She was very excited to see Babygirl, and she was excited to see Perfect Couple too, but she didn't get to see either of those."
Babygirl
At the start of the year, Nicole Kidman wowed audiences with the debut of her new film, Babygirl, generating significant buzz.
The daring thriller follows the life of Romy (played by Nicole Kidman), a successful CEO who risks it all for a forbidden romance with her young intern Samuel, portrayed by Harris Dickinson.
However, Kidman confesses the intimate scenes became too much, leading to what she described as "burnout".
Discussing the pressures with the Daily Star, she confessed: "There were times when we were shooting where I was like, 'I don't want to orgasm any more. Don't come near me. I hate doing this. I don't care if I am never touched again in my life! I'm over it.'".
"It was so present all the time for me that it was almost like a burnout."
