The Deer Hunter, which star Robert De Niro, was released in 1978 and has since been named one of the greatest films ever made by critics and viewers alike

A timeless war classic starring Robert De Niro is now streaming on Amazon Prime, with fans hailing it as "one of the greatest films ever made".

The Deer Hunter, directed by Michael Cimino and released in 1978, tells the story of three Slavic-American steelworkers (played by De Niro, Christopher Walken, and John Savage) whose lives are forever changed by their experiences in the Vietnam War. As they return to their small Pennsylvania town, the film delves into the profound impact of the war's horrors on their lives.

The movie's title originates from a pivotal scene where Mike (De Niro) takes down a deer with a single shot during a hunting trip with friends. One of Mike's most memorable lines is: "You have to think about the one shot. One shot is what it's all about. A deer has to be taken with one shot. I try to tell people that but they don't listen."

The Deer Hunter received nine Academy Award nominations in 1979, securing five wins: Best Picture, Best Director (Cimino), Best Supporting Actor (Walken), Best Sound, and Best Film Editing. Additionally, it marked Meryl Streep's first Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress.

This iconic film has been featured on numerous lists of the greatest films ever made, including the American Film Institute's 2007 ranking as the 53rd-greatest American film of all time, reports The Express UK.

In 1996, the Library of Congress selected The Deer Hunter for preservation in the United States National Film Registry, recognizing it as "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant." Audiences have embraced the film's prestige, with one IMDB user proclaiming it "one of the greatest films ever made."

Another viewer called De Niro "sensational" and confessed: "By the end I thought of them as brothers and I loved them. I actually loved them. That in itself is a sort of film miracle."

A third person praised the movie by commenting: "Cimino's great directing and the cast's awesome acting provide for a touching and honest drama about the friendship of a group of young men that is destroyed by the Vietnam war.

"The Deer Hunter" has its origins in an unproduced script titled "The Man Who Came to Play" by Louis A. Garfinkle and Quinn K. Redeker, which was centered around Las Vegas and Russian roulette.

Michael Cimino and Deric Washburn transformed the script after producer Michael Deeley acquired it, incorporating some of the screenplay's original elements into the backdrop of the Vietnam War.
