Amazon Prime axes 10 TV shows - from star-studded horror to iconic film reboot

Amazon Prime has taken a number of shows off the air in recent months, with some even being canceled after just one season.

Amazon Prime subscribers might need to search for some fresh shows to binge-watch, as the streaming giant has axed several fan-favorite shows.

In a string of recent moves, Amazon Prime has yanked a number of TV series from its platform and terminated them permanently. Among the casualties is The Bondsman, starring heavyweight actor Kevin Bacon.

Though it debuted on the platform just last month, sources told The Hollywood Reporter that the show was scrapped after eight episodes.

The series failed to captivate audiences, managing only a single week in the streaming rankings' top 10, clinching the ninth spot. Bacon played the lead character Hub Halloran - a country music legend resurrected from the dead after being murdered.

In the storyline, the Devil revives Hub for the purpose of hunting down devils who've fled from inferno. However, the horror series' distinctive narrative didn't resonate with audiences.

Also getting the chop is the reboot of the iconic 1999 movie Cruel Intentions. The follow-up, which featured Sarah Catherine Hook of The White Lotus, Zac Burgess and Savannah Lee Smith from the Gossip Girl revival, was halted before a second season could be produced.

Released last November, the series was slammed by critics, garnering a meager 24% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Harsh critiques described it as "eye-rollingly bad" and "a total waste of time."

The Cruel Intentions movie remains an enduring favorite, notable for boosting the profiles of actors Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe, Reese Witherspoon and Selma Blair. However, the film's success did not transfer to its TV adaptation.

Despite a high 89% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Laverne Cox's comedy series Clean Slate was cut by Amazon Prime executives.

The Pradeeps of Pittsburgh

The police drama On Call also experienced an unexpected cancellation; even after topping the Amazon Prime charts and seemingly setting up for a second season, it was dropped, leading showrunners to seek other networks.

The impact was further felt with the cancellation of Citadel's spin-offs Honey Bunny and Diana. Likewise, the Canadian sitcom The Sticky, as well as the eight-episode comedy The Pradeeps of Pittsburgh, won't return.

Harlem, another comedic offering, has been discontinued after a three-season run.

Vernon Sanders, head of television at Amazon MGM Studios, announced the closure of the series, "As we prepare to say goodbye to this incredible series, we're both grateful for the journey Tracy has taken us on and excited for our global customers to experience a final season that truly honors these characters."

Regrettably, the cancellations don't stop there as the comedy-drama Almost Paradise has also been axed by the streaming behemoth after two seasons.

The show was originally created for Amazon Freevee, the complimentary spin-off of Prime, but with the announcement that Prime was being discontinued, it was revealed that Almost Paradise would also be ending.

However, the show's director, Dean Devlin, has already confessed that he is looking for a new home for the program.
