CNN's Anderson Cooper broke away from regular programming to deliver a crushing blow for Elon Musk after SpaceX Starship's launch.

The anchor aired "breaking news" and disclosed that within just 30 minutes, the rocket had lost control due to complications in orbit.

He declared, "We have some breaking news on the SpaceX launch," as footage from the ninth Starship played. Cooper went on, "This is a live image from the SpaceX rocket. They have lost control of it in space, it is now rolling, we are told... it's not expected to survive re-entering."

There were high hopes for a successful mission for Musk. However, this test flight marks the third consecutive failure for SpaceX Starship.

Musk had planned to deploy a series of dummy satellites after lift-off, but the plan was scrapped when its payload door failed to fully open.

The spacecraft had been mounted on top of a Super Heavy booster that was being reused for the first time ever and although that was supposed to ensure a soft landing, it ended up crashing into the Gulf of America, formerly known as the Gulf of Mexico.

SpaceX envisions that Starship will one day transport people and cargo to Mars, but this latest hiccup casts a shadow over Musk's aspirations.

The unsuccessful launches earlier this year caused disruptions across dozens of flights across the U.S., and the project was grounded for two months while investigations were conducted.

Despite this, the billionaire labeled the latest test flight as a "big improvement" and pledged to speed up the rate of future launches. Musk also disclosed that the subsequent three flights will occur every three to four weeks.

On X, the company stated, "With a test like this, success comes from what we learn, and today's test will help us improve Starship's reliability."

NASA has expressed its need for SpaceX to make significant progress with Starship over the next 12 months as the U.S. agency strives to achieve its goal of returning astronauts to the moon. Alongside a live stream of the takeoff, footage shared on social media depicted Musk observing the test flight from a control center, wearing a T-shirt bearing the slogan "Occupy Mars."
