Defining the right amount of exercise for pets can be challenging. Questions like how long the walks should be or how many walks per day are best often arise.

To help clarify these concerns, veterinary expert Dr. Nicole Rous recently shared a helpful guide on TikTok, breaking down the ideal exercise routine for dogs at different life stages.

According to Dr. Rous, the amount of exercise a dog needs varies depending on its age. For puppies, she suggests walking them for five minutes twice a day for each month of their age.

So, if you have a four-month-old puppy, that equates to 20 minutes of exercise twice a day.

It's important to note that this doesn't just include walks; it also encompasses playtime in the yard and other activities, reported The Express.

When it comes to adult dogs, Dr. Rous recommends between 30 to 60 minutes of exercise daily, although this can vary based on the breed.

Dr. Nicole Rous stated: "If you've got a really active breed like a border collie, you're probably looking at one to two hours.

"And if you've got a more sedentary breed, you might be looking at two 20 minute walks a day rather than the full hour."

For senior dogs, Dr. Rous suggests 30 to 60 minutes of exercise, but the type of activity is key to ensuring their joints are cared for with only low-impact exercises.

She further advised: "Look at the surface you're walking on and then consider things like hydrotherapy."

Incorporating regular walks can be especially beneficial for older dogs, as she noted: "That's really good exercise for the oldies to include in their regime, but the exercise is so, so important to keep going even if they have arthritis."

The key is to keep the mind and body active. "We want consistent exercise and we want to make sure we're still using their brain because that's so important just as it is for humans."

Ultimately, the duration of a dog's walk depends on its age and breed, but maintaining a consistent routine is essential for overall physical and mental well-being.
