Danica Patrick pleaded for "common sense" in the feud between Riley Gaines and Simone Biles surrounding transgender athletes - before siding with the former swimmer.

The dispute between Gaines and the seven-time Olympic gold medallist was sparked after the former had hurled mocking comments on at the Minnesota State High School League for turning comments off on a social media post that congratulated Champlin Park High School's girls' softball team on Friday.

The team - which includes a transgender girl - had just won the state championship but was pelted with the hurtful words by Gaines.

She wrote: "This championship was hijacked" before referring to the softball player as "a boy". Biles, 28, bit back at her fellow American online as she stood up for transgender athletes.

"You’re truly sick, all of this campaigning because you lost a race. Straight up sore loser," Biles wrote on X.

"You should be uplifting the trans community and perhaps finding a way to make sports more inclusive OR creating a new avenue where trans feel safe in sports. Maybe a transgender category in ALL SPORTS!!

"But instead… You bully them…" she continued. "One thing for sure is no one in sports is safe with you around!!!!!" In a second post, she again took aim at Gaines as she said: "Bully someone your own size, which would ironically be a male."

The 25-year-old has been an activist against transgender athletes in women's sports since she famously tied for fifth place with transgender women Lia Thomas in the 200m freestyle swimming at the 2022 NCAA Championships.

Gaines called the gymnast's stance on the matter "so disappointing" and was joined by Patrick who had similar thoughts on the matter as she blasted the "woke mind virus" that she claims exists in women's sports. "This issue has a shelf life," the former race car driver wrote on Instagram.

"I truly believe common sense will prevail. But until then, I am grateful for people like Riley Gaines who are making sure no-one gets away with it.

"Not to mention that fact that she actually lived it. Defending men in women's sports is the woke mind virus and/or another issue that requires therapy. Either way, it is so irrational."
