Delta Airlines is changing up its seating section by removing its Basic Economy seats - as these will now be incorporated into the Delta Main category.

Passengers can now purchase their tickets in one of five sections: Delta Main, Delta Comfort, Delta First, Delta Premium Select, and Delta One. The lowest cost seats will be found in Delta Main, while Delta One offers the most luxurious experience.

This comes shortly as American Airlines is considering changing its baggage policy in response to new regulations affecting European airports. These changes, which tighten the rules around what qualifies as an acceptable carry-on bag, could soon be adopted by US airlines.

The announcement was made on May 15, and the new seating will begin for flights departing on or after Oct. 1. Delta leaders say it comes from customer feedback on the best travel experiences.

Eric Phillips, senior vice president and Chief Digital Officer, said in a news release: “As we listen and learn about what our customers want when it comes to their travel, we know that clarity and choice are paramount.

“Our reimagined shopping experience gives customers more options and flexibility to pick the travel experience that works best for them, and a full picture of all the benefits of flying with Delta.”

The Delta Main category can be broken down further into three tiered experiences: Basic, Classic and Extra. Basic, which offers the same as the former economy section, is the lowest cost option.

In this section, customers are assigned seats after check-in, placed in Zone 8 boarding, must pay a cancellation fee with a partial eCredit, and don’t receive Delta SkyMiles.

DON'T MISS...

Classic lets customers get a little more, including five miles per dollar (excluding taxes), eCredits if you cancel, better boarding priority, same-day standby options, and added flexibility to choose your seat. Extra allows for even higher boarding priority, earn seven miles per dollar (excluding taxes/fees), easy refundability and more.

The new products and experiences are available via a modernized shopping layout on Delta.com and Fly Delta app. These experiences are only offered with flights departing from the US or Canada.
