US expat reveals one 'sweet' British habit she won't be using with other Americans
An American expat who has lived in the UK for more than 20 years has opened up about the British habit she's picked up - but revealed why she'd avoid using it with non-Brits
A US expat residing in the UK has identified a local custom she's adopted that she "wouldn't do" with a "non-British friend". Lisa, who has called the UK home for over 20 years, recently shared her observations on British habits in a video for her travel-themed YouTube channel, Seeking Soft AuDventure.
With more than two decades immersed in British culture, Lisa confessed that she now says and does some "very British things", including one specific habit related to cell phone use.
Besides frequently saying 'sorry', one distinctly British habit that Lisa has picked up - which might surprise many - is ending messages with x or xx.
She explained: "So, I think I ended up asking about that. So, that's how I knew early on what that meant. But, over time, you started seeing it in text messages and Messenger. I've even had replies from Facebook Marketplace have XX in them."
"Typically, I think it's reserved for people you're close friends with or, you know, maybe romantically involved. I wouldn't do it with a non-British friend, although I've definitely forgotten.
"I've also had this slip up where I've accidentally sent it to my boss, which is a bit unfortunate. But I think I assume that others have had that slip up, too."
Lisa added that she "immediately" thinks she's done something wrong if someone stops using an 'XX' in a chat, but admitted that she also forgets at times, especially when she's been messaging non-Brits.
Despite the cultural differences, Lisa has no plans to abandon her British habit, attributing her decision to a touching reason. She stated: "I'm not giving it up. It's very sweet."

On the flip side, another American expat shared some US customs that reportedly shock Brits in a story from January. These include offering house tours, being loud, and openly discussing religion.
Kalyn, an American living in Britain for nearly a decade, runs the Girl Gone London YouTube channel. She pointed out other practices like presenting restaurant bills to patrons as their food arrives and not placing cutlery on your plate after finishing a meal.
Regarding the tradition of house tours, she explained: "So, in the States, it's not considered weird; Americans love giving a house tour. A visitor comes over to your house and you want to show them around your house."
She added that Americans tend to enjoy their homes as a place to "have people over for longer periods of time", which Kalyn says "reflects back" on their passion for the tour.
